Is it okay for a ‘non-sick’ cat to eat prescription wet food?

the_3dees asked:

My male cat was constipated. We took him to the vet and he was prescribed ‘Hill’s W/D prescription Diet’. I told the doctor that we have another cat at home and it would be difficult for us to keep them separate since they like to eat out of each other’s bowls. She told me not to worry if she eats it. But should I worry if she is eating it on a regular basis? All I know about this food is that it is high fiber and low fat. If that’s all, can I just feed them both the food?

How can I get my very sick cat to drink and eat?

R B asked:

My 10 yr old cat became very sick last week. She was diagnosed with a serious & relatively rare heart disease: arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia. She came home from the vet on Thurs night. Today is Sun. Her prognosis is not good, but it’s possible that her condition can be managed for a time with medication, lasix to reduce fluid & enalapril to lower blood pressure so her heart doesn’t have to work as hard. This is helping as her breathing seems ok, but she is not eating or drinking & of course is very lethargic. She drank some water on Thurs & maybe on Fri, but I have not seen her drink anything since then (today is Sun). She ate a very, very small amount on Thurs & Fri, but has not eaten since. I’ve tried a variety of wet foods, tuna, baby food. She may be dying and there may be no option other than putting her to sleep, but I know there is absolutely no hope if she doesn’t get any food or water on top of a weak heart. Any tips for getting her to eat or drink? Thanks.
I should have mentioned that I am in contact with the vet, and there is nothing they can do except force feed her, which think would be too stressful. They will not give her fluids because a problem with heart disease is accumulation of fluids in the chest cavity. That’s why she is on the lasix, which is a diuretic to slightly dehyrdrate her. Which wouldn’t be a problem if she was still drinking. I’m hoping someone has been successful at getting a sick cat to eat and drink and can share how they did it.

My cat is 11. I am scared.

What food should I give her, something really healthy and for her age, to make sure she can live as long as possible? So far I’ve been giving her Fancy Feast but I don’t think that’s good. Please!!!!!

Is it bad to let my cat eat the mice he catches?

Sandy asked:

Okay, my kitty loves to catch mice. I love to rescue cute little animals. When he brings them in- still alove, I try to set them free but they come back inside within minutes and he gets them again.
Well, a few times he brought them to me dead. More an more often, I’m asuming he takes them away to play with them lately because I keep taking them away and throwing them outside.

Last night I placed him in the tub (easy to clean and it’s where I always save the mice because they can’t escape and I can catch them later tossing them outside) and atempted to rescue his latest catch but it was already dead. Out of curiosity I let him play with it (in the tub still, no mouse blood on my carpet!!) to see what he would do. Well, after five minutes he tried eating it. I tossed it out.
Now, I am wondering is it okay to let my cat eat the mouse. I’m worried about the parasites mice might carry. I know my cat licks his own bum and all but still. Would it be bad/unhealthy to let him eat mice???

Is there anything I can give to help a sick cat feel better?

Kitty Krazy 98 asked:

Yesterday, we went fishing and we fed some of the scraps to the cats. One of my 2-month kittens is now just lying around this morning. He doesn’t appear to ill, but just seems to have a stomach ache or something. Besides just lying around, he seems to be pretty normal, (trying to play, but just not feeling like it). I was wondering if there was something simple I could feed him to help him feel better. Or is it something I should be concerned about?

How can I get my sick cat to keep her food down after force feeding her?

Posted: April 29th, 2009 | Filed under: Cat Health | No Comments »

Penelope asked:

My 4 year old cat is starving herself to death. The vet recommended force feeding her with a syringe but she throws it up minutes later. She will drink her water but has not eaten in weeks. The vet said she will be dead within a few days if she does not eat. Am I feeding her too much, too fast? I have been only feeding her about 2 tablespoons at a time. Anyone have any suggestions.

How much should I feed my sick cat (from a syringe)?

Bumblebee’s Mama asked:

Yesterday I noticed my cat was having trouble walking and she wasn’t eating. I tried everything to get her to eat a little but didn’t have any luck. I took her to the vet last night and she gave me some liquid medicine which seems to be working. She can walk again but still ignores all food and water. I got her some kitten formula and I’ve been giving it to her with the syringe I got with the medicine. I’ve been able to get her to eat 2 tsp of kitten formula and 1 tsp of water today. The syringe measure up to 1/2 tsp. I’m trying to take it slow with her feedings, but how much should I try to get into her in a day? The formula label says 2 tbsp a day for a full grown cat but I’m not sure I can get her to eat that much. I don’t know how much she weighs. The vet said if she doesn’t eat every day her liver could shut down and I want to keep her hydrated. My cat might not have much longer to live, the vet said it might be a brain tumor or FIP. We’re taking her back to the vet tonight.
My kitty is about 5-6 years old. I adopted her from a rescue so I’m not entirely sure. But she’s not old yet.

We decided to take her to the vet on Sunday instead of last night because she is doing a lot better. I did manage to get a lot more food into her and each time I fed her she looked a lot better. At the end of the night my husband managed to get her to drink some formula out of a saucer. However she is back to ignoring all food and water today.

Today on his way home from work my husband is going to pick up some more kitten formula, some more canned food, and a bottle designed for feeding kittens. We’re going to try the bottle because she was really biting onto the syringe even when it was empty. I think it might be easier for her to eat out of a bottle.

Thank you for all your suggestions. :) I will keep trying different things and offering her food and water from a dish before and after syringe feeding her.

why does my maine coon cat suddenly eat human food?

s M asked:

For about a month now my maine coon cat is into any human food in sight. He never did this before and now he tears through the wrappers of bread, raw meat, cheeses, cookies, etc. He climbs on the table and counters looking for any human foods to eat, even out of the pots and bowls. Why would he start doing this after 14+ years?

Can a cat eat green olives and not get sick?

Our cat loves the smell and likes to lick green olives. Do you know if the vinegar is to much for him?
